"Orientalism" is a term dating back to the 18th and 19th century that was revived by the Palestinian-American intellectual Edward Said (1935-2003). Orientalism defines societies as developed and civilized if they conform to Western norms, desires and values. This sense of superiority results in erroneous policies, wars, hatred, and bigotry; which still manifest themselves gruesomely today.
